Auckland and Kumeu Film Studios

Brief
Screen Auckland wanted to give global filmmakers, directors, and production companies the opportunity to view and experience two world-class film studios based in Auckland. Rather than produce a promotional video, we used our 3D site capture and drone equipment to create a virtual tour, allowing prospective studio hirers to have an immersive experience around the spaces.

Screen Auckland – part of Tātaki Auckland Unlimited – is responsible for the leasing and marketing of two epic film studios in Tāmaki Makaurau. Kumeu Film Studios is located on a 67-acre site, with two purpose-built sound stages totalling 4673sqm, a warehouse, workshops, production offices and New Zealand’s two largest water tanks. The facility has hosted movies such as The Meg, Disney’s Mulan, and Amazon Studios’ The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. Auckland Film Studios consists of five studios: two 2000sqm new purpose-built stages, one 1924sqm purpose-built stage, and two warehouse stages, 868sqm and 784sqm.

Our digital team went to both sites to 3D capture all facilities before creating digital twin models. The digital models can be viewed remotely via a secure portal, and the technology includes avatars to show scale and onscreen tools that display accurate on-site measurements for the end-user. Potential filmmakers and production companies can experience the facilities from wherever they are in the world. As part of the project, we created a short sales video that Screen Auckland has uploaded to its website to showcase Auckland as the premier place to make films. The film also demonstrates our digital twin model capabilities.
