Kauri House
Kauri House
Single Residential
Architecture, Interior design
Located in the semi-rural setting of Oratia, this renovation of a cherished 1980’s residence updated and future proofed the house, addressing basic issues including regular power outages, and no mobile, sanitary or stormwater services.
With light coloured timber recesses puncturing the dark, understated exterior, the house nestles comfortably in the mature landscape.
Drawing inspiration from the metaphor of a Japanese lantern, by day the interior is filled with light – both direct and diffuse, by night it becomes a glowing lantern in the trees.
Timber, stone, glass and concrete are beautifully detailed with light, shadows and reflections playing across their surfaces as the moody west coast weather patterns pass through, making this home a sensory retreat.
