Addington Salesyard
Addington Salesyard
Masterplan
Masterplanning, Architecture, Landscape design
Context was engaged to masterplan a six-hectare site in Addington, Christchurch, formerly home to the historic saleyards that operated from 1874 to 1997. The brief called for a vibrant, staged redevelopment that respects the site’s heritage while introducing a mix of residential, commercial, and retail uses.
The first phase proposes 125 homes and a 100-room hotel, with future stages accommodating up to 500 dwellings, office space, and a second hotel. The masterplan allows flexibility to respond to market shifts and planning needs, ensuring long-term viability.
Designs respond to the surrounding context, stepping from low-scale residential at the northern edge to six-storey forms at the southern boundary. Green corridors link building typologies and connect the site to nearby Hagley Park. A palette of brick and steel, along with inclined pathways, pays tribute to the site’s industrial past and livestock ramps.
